Fake Security Products

FAQ

Fake(d) security products form a growing threat to all computers connected to the Internet. Basically they show weppages on your screen while you are browsing the web that overlay the original webpage on screen. Check out screenshots in our gallery section to see if anything looks familiar...

The problem is really a bunch of problems:

  • they frighten people to buy software they do not need (because it doesn't do what it claims to do)
  • in most cases they INFECT the computer in the first place
  • some of them are very difficult (=costly) to eliminate
  • if undetected and installed they might transfer information from the infected computer to someone who is up to no good

Bottom line: they steal your money and your identity for further criminal activities. Estimates are that the "suppliers" of these rogue security products can make more than $10.000 every day...

First line of defense:

Be aware while online.

  • No legitimate antivirus vendor will start a scan automatically on your computer without your consent. Therefore a message claiming you have 120 infected files cannot be trusted (unless it comes from your legitimate security product)
  • Most of these 'panic-pop-ups' do look professional, they mimic the appearance of legit software and without any knowledge of the existence of the problem in the first place it is no wonder people are convinced to do the right thing by clicking on the buttons offered.

Typical 'Symptoms' of an infection are sluggish speed, unwanted behavior (e.g. random programs running, pop-ups, unwanted internet pages loading), fake warnings, system errors, and crashes. More recent "offerings" of this particular sort of malware disable the legitimate AV product and prevent access to a lot of websites where a cure could be found. Therefore the user feels he has no other option but to go along with the "solution" provided by the offending product. Don't be lured into handing over money, it will not resolve the problem. Call us instead on 087-6382240 to handle the problem.

Second line of defense:

Duck and cover.

Signing up with a site rating service might be a good idea if you are a 'wanderer', meaning you do not stick with Gmail, your sports site and the RTE website.
If you like to explore the web and never know where the next 5 clicks will take you this might be a vital thing.

There are two services we have tested and can recommend:

WOT (= Web Of Trust) http://www.mywot.com/
SiteAdvisor http://www.siteadvisor.com/
